Tubal Reversal Surgery And What The Procedure Involves

By Gregory Kelly

Tubal ligation reversal refers to the procedure used for restoration of fertility in women who have had tubal ligation. Tubal ligation is the procedure that involves cutting or blocking Fallopian tubes so as to prevent pregnancy. For the process of reversal, there is re-connection of the blocked segments to the remaining portions of the Fallopian tubes. In consideration of tubal reversal surgery, one should understand what the procedure involves.

The treatment is done so that women are able to get pregnant without them having to consider other medical treatments. It should however be noted that it is not ideal for all people and there are factors that will affect its success. Some of the factors which will be considered are the length of the tubes that remaining, body mass index and age of the individual, extent of Fallopian tube damage and the type of tubal ligation that was used.

The probability of having a successful procedure will depend on the Fallopian portions that are healthy. In addition to that, it will work best for people who had the procedure done using clips or rings, as compared to those that had it done by burning. There are various risks that one should expect. For instance, the person could end up not getting pregnant again. This is so because level of success depends on age and other factors.

Other complications that can be experienced are scarring of Fallopian tubes, infections, bleeding and injury to organs that are nearby. Some women could also experience ectopic pregnancy which happens when fertilized eggs are implanted outside the uterus. The implantation in such a case happens in the Fallopian tube. The various risks and complications should be discussed with the surgeon before you go for the procedure.

Tubal ligation reversal can be done as either an outpatient or inpatient procedure. For the procedure, a doctor uses laparoscopic equipment for making tiny incisions on the abdomen. This is followed by reattachment of the tubes. The laparoscopic equipment are small tubes that are attached to small cameras and other surgical equipment. There will then be the removal of blocked fragments and an attempt by the doctor to repair the tubes using tiny stitches.

When treatment is done, it takes some time before one can resume their daily activities. It could take some weeks. As for the stitches, they will dissolve because they are small, meaning there is no need for any follow up appointment to remove them. You would need to know when the next appointment with the doctor will be.

Before you decide to go for the tubal ligation reversal, you need to know what it will cost. Insurance does not cater for the costs in many cases. Generally, you should expect to part with some several thousand dollars, which includes cost of surgery and tests that will be required.

In vitro fertilization is the alternative to tubal reversal. With the IVF procedure, a women will have their eggs fertilized externally by a sperm. After fertilization, the embryo gets implanted in the womb. It is an option that works well for women that have failed to get pregnant after tubal reversal.
