How Treating Swollen Gums Can Be Done Easily

Swollen gums result from many causes. In some cases, the condition is caused by poor diet, tooth misalignment, hormones, medications, and oral diseases such as chronic gingivitis and periodontitis. Some people experience the problem because of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a white filmy substance that is deposited on teeth and gums and when not removed, it hardens to form tartar. Formation of tartar may also be accompanied with bacterial infection which causes swelling. Catching the problem early enough is the key to treating swollen gums.

There are several risk factors associated with swelling of gums. Major ones are smoking, diabetes, genetic susceptibility, medications, and hormonal changes in women. The most significant risk factor among the ones mentioned is smoking. Besides being a risk factor, smoking also lowers chance of a successful recovery or treatment. Medications cause swelling when they reduce flow of saliva inside the mouth, hence promoting the possibility of infection.

It is not easy to notice inflammation of the gums It is common to have the problem and never notice it or get used to it that it is no longer a problem. Inflamed gum will always appear different from one that is not and knowing the difference between the two is key to noticing the problem. Either way, certain symptoms characterize the problem and can be noticed with ease.

When the gum becomes inflamed they change color. Typically, they become red, blue, dark pink, or purple. The papilla gets blunt or disappears while teeth margins roll. Some people feel severe pain or discomfort. When brushing teeth, some blood may appear in the mouth. Symptoms come at different rates or they may all flow in at once. Some symptoms may also skip and never appear.

There is no need for a dentist when trying to treat and reverse swollen gums. The only requirements are dedication, balanced diet, and proper oral hygiene. Mild and moderate inflammation can be reversed or treated when the bacteria that cause it are removed physically while maintaining a balanced diet.

Brushing needs to be done twice in a day using the right toothbrush for quick results. The method used should also be the right one. One should hold the toothbrush at forty five degrees towards the gum. The toothbrush should be soft bristled. One can see a dentist to recommend the best toothpaste to use.
